In 2005, Slovakia spent € 45 million on Official Development Assistance (ODA), which corresponds to 0.12% of its gross national income(GNI). Bilateral means accounted for 10% of the total, while 90% was multilateral.

- developing democratic institutions and a market environment;
- infrastructure (including social infrastructure) particularly health care, education, transport infrastructure, demining works, construction of sewage systems, water purification and treatment plants, development of waste management, projects and engineering services in the area of drinking water supply and development of energy infrastructure; and
- landscaping, protection of the environment, agriculture, food safety and the use of raw materials.

NGOs can apply for financial support under the following funding programmes:
The Bratislava–Belgrade Fund: this instrument funds projects for Slovak businesses, state organisations and NGOs in Serbia and Montenegro.
Slovak Trust Fund: this instrument has been established by the Slovak Republic and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and funds projects for Slovak businesses, state organisations and NGOs in developing countries.
