In 2005, Austria spent US$ 1.552 billion on official development assistance, which corresponds to 0.52% of its Gross National Income (GNI). 78% was channelled to recipients by bilateral means while 22% was multilateral.

Funding programmes:

NGOs can apply for financial support under the following funding programmes:

NGO-Framework Programmes: This scheme finances individual and pilot projects in developing countries through the Australian Development Agency (ADA) Framework Programmes with individual NGOs registered in Austria. 

Individual NGO projects – South: This instrument co-finances individual NGO projects in developing countries except Southeast and Eastern Europe and Central Asia. 

Individual NGO projects – East: This instrument co-finances individual NGO projects in South-East and Eastern Europe as well as Central Asia. 

NGO Microprojects: This instrument co-finances microprojects of groups or organizations through the “Three-Year Programme of the Austrian Development Cooperation”. 

EU-Cofinancing: Development projects that have been accepted by the European Commission (EC) for co-financing are also eligible for the „EU-Cofinancing“ scheme of the Austrian development cooperation.
