EU News: European Parliament (EP) calls for women's
empowerment in EU Development Cooperation
25 February
On the occasion of the 15th
anniversary of the Beijing Platform for Action, Members of the European
Parliament debated progress towards the goals of the 1995 conference and
adopted a parliamentary resolution on the issue. After DSW's successful
advocacy work with the EP's Committee on Women's Rights and Gender
Equality (FEMM), the resolution now contains a specific article calling on
the EU Member States and the European Commission to "advance women's
empowerment, gender equality and gender mainstreaming in development
cooperation, including through the completion and adoption of an EU Gender
Action Plan, in accordance with the Paris Declaration on Aid Effectiveness
and the Accra Agenda for Action". Other articles of the resolution stress
the importance of sexual and reproductive health and rights as integral
part of the women's rights and health agendas - both in Europe and
globally. The whole text can be retrieved here:http://www.europarl.europa.eu/sides/getDoc.do?pubRef=-//EP//TEXT+TA+P7-TA-2010-0037+0+DOC+XML+V0//EN&language=EN

the Status of Women. Her speech focused on minimizing the gender gap
between men and women and putting an end to violence against women, which
she conveyed with great ardor. She affirmed that these topics should be

EU News: Piebalgs gives key note speech at the
Action for Global Health (AFGH) High Level Conference on the Millennium
Development Goals (MDGs)
2 March
Andris Piebalgs, EU Commissioner for
Development was one of the high level speakers who opened the AFGH Cross
Europe Conference. The one-day conference focused on Europe’s role in
combating poverty-related crises by 2015. Mr Piebalgs and Ms. Eva Joly,
Chairwoman of the Committee on Development acknowledged that there is
still much work to be done before Member States reach their MDG
commitments. Maternal mortality (MDG 5) is the MDG the most off track. Mr
Piebalgs affirmed that ‘health is a prerequisite for economic development
and that maternal mortality due to the neglect of sexual rights and gender
inequality is 200 times higher in Sub-Saharan Africa than in the EU’.
