EU News: Capacity-Building for NGOs in West Africa - DSW conducts the last of its 'AHEAD' workshops

4 - 6 January

In partnership with Equilibres et Populations in Burkina Faso, DSW conducted the last of its AHEAD regional civil society capacity-building workshops. The AHEAD project involved four regional workshops in Africa and Asia to improve local CSO capacity to advocate for increased national support of reproductive health. At the recent West African workshop, DSW trained 16 participants from Burkina Faso, Mali, Senegal, and Niger. EU News: Development Commissioner-designate Andris Pieblags affirms commitment to development aid during European Parliament (EP) hearing

11 January

Despite his lack of experience within the field of Development and as one of the first Commissioner-designates to be scrutinized by the EP, Mr. Andris Piebalgs demonstrated his motivation for the new role and confirmed his commitment to the Millennium Development Goals. Although sexual and reproductive health and rights were not touched upon in his written responses, Piebalgs stressed his commitment to ensuring more funding for development and told the EP that he "shall not hesitate to identify very clearly those member states that fail to meet their commitments". Parliament will decide whether to approve the new European Commission as a whole on January 26. For a summary of this hearing, visit:

EU News: Turbulent European Parliament hearing of Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response (ECHO) Commissioner-designate Rumiana Jeleva

12 January

Following a tumultuous period of rumors and allegations concerning her personal life, Ms. Rumiana Jeleva, the most controversial of the Commissioners-designate, has received the support of European Commission President José Barroso. During her hearing, she identified her priorities to respect international humanitarian law and to do her utmost to protect women suffering gender-based violence in conflict situations. Ms. Jeleva reassured the importance of NGOs for ECHO and commited to work towards an enhanced cooperation with them.
