EU News: European Commission strengthens its commitment to equality between women and men

5 March

To celebrate the occasion of International Women’s Day, the European Commission showed its’ commitment to gender equality with a Women’s Charter. This political declaration strategizes five key areas for action and commits the Commission to strengthening its gender perspective amongst all policies. The Charter affirmed that gender equality is not limited to the borders of the Union but is to be fully incorporated into external policies. It is still important to ensure “the vigorous pursuit of gender equality in relations with third countries and raise awareness of the rights of women.” The full document can be retrieved at:http://ec.europa.eu/social/main.jsp?langId=en&catId=89&newsId=726&furtherNews=yes

EU News: MEPs, national MPs and experts meet to discuss ways to bring about an end to violence against women

19 March

The European Parliament Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality (FEMM) organized an event celebrating International Women’s Day. The theme of the event was “Violence Against Women: We Can Stop It!” which also coincides with the EU presidency which has made combating violence against women one of its priorities. One of the speakers, Viviane Reding, Vice-President responsible for Justice, Fundamental rights and Citizenship in the European Commission said ‘Every day is a woman’s day. We have come a long way but there is still a long way to go and the European Commission women’s charter will ensure that gender is mainstreamed into every area”.
