Local
Authorities (LA) in Development: Objective 1 aims at building the capacity
of local authorities in developing countries to engage in local, national
and international decision-making processes. Objective 2 aims at
supporting actions of local authorities to raise public awareness of
development issues in Europe. - In developing countries (objective 1),
in Europe (objectives 2), until: 25.02.2010, budget: 27,300,000
€.

EU News: Gunilla Carlsson directly refers to Sexual
and Reproductive Rights in speech commemorating Worlds Aid Day

Gunilla Carlsson spoke in Pretoria,
South Africa as a representative of the Presidency of the European Union
to stress a few points that the EU believes are areas necessary to address
for an effective response to HIV/AIDS. The agenda included ensuring
sufficient sexual education for adolescents, securing gender equality to
address the specific needs of women and finally an emphasis that sexual
and reproductive health and rights must be recognized as an essential
component of HIV/AIDS programmes and prevention. For more information on

Resources: UNFPA Report – Adding it, the Costs and
Benefits of Investing in Family Planning and Maternal and Newborn
Health

The joint report produced by UNFPA and
Guttmacher Institute has revealed that a doubled investment in family
planning and pregnancy-related care could reduce maternal deaths by 70%
and newborn deaths by 50% worldwide. The study has shown that progress on
reducing maternal and newborn deaths has been extremely slow, particularly
in the two poorest regions, South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa. The study
reveals that the total investment needed to meet existing needs is $24.6

Resources: DSW FastFact on civil society involvement
in the MTR consultations

DSW has published their latest
Fastfact based on a survey carried out among six Reproductive Health
organizations in the global South. It aims to provide RH advocates around
the world with a tool that they can use to improve NSA involvement in EC
consultations and to demonstrate what has gone well in the MTR process and
