Upcoming Events: EU Finance Ministers debate draft EU budget 2010

18 November

The Ministers of Finance of the 27 EU Member States will come together as the Budget Council to discuss the amendments and proposals made by the Members of European Parliament (MEPs) in the First Reading of the draft Budget 2010 in October. Later that same day, the Council will meet for a conciliation meeting with the EP on the same issue. Upcoming Events: Launch of the UNFPA State of the World Population Report

18 November

In a new report to be issued on 18 November, the UNFPA will emphasize the role of people, and especially empowered women, in the fight against climate change. Woven around the theme ‘Facing a Changing World: Women, Population and Climate’, the report establishes that climate change is not just an issue of energy efficiency or industrial carbon emissions, but also of population dynamics, poverty and gender equity. Resources: WHO report on Women and health: Today’s Evidence Tomorrow’s Agenda

9 November

A report commissioned by the World Health Organization gathers a baseline of data about the health of women and girls throughout their lives, in different parts of the world and in different groups within countries. Amongst its findings, the report reveals that the health status of girls and women in sub-Saharan Africa is, by nearly every measure, the lowest in the world: “for women aged 20 to 60 years in affluent countries, the risk of premature death is only 6%. In sub-Saharan Africa, the risk is 42%, or seven times higher.” The full report can be retrieved here:http://whqlibdoc.who.int/publications/2009/9789241563857_eng.pdf
