EU News: DSW participates in the 2009 EuroNGOs Conference and Annual General Meeting

7-8 September

Fellow EuroNGOs member and partner organisations from the European Union (EU), the USA, Australia and New Zealand, as well as representatives from the Global South, private foundations, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), and the World Health Organisation (WHO) met at this year's Annual General Meeting in Riga, Latvia. This year’s EuroNGOs conference aimed at enhancing understanding of the current and possible future impact of the global economic crisis on SRHR and SRHR funding streams among organizations in attendance. With this meeting, DSW Vice-Executive Director Karen Hoehn’s three-year term in the EuroNGOs steering committee came to an end. EU News: European Commission holds consultations on EU Communication on Global Health

10 September

In Brussels, DSW participated in a first consultation meeting on a planned EU Communication on Global Health, together with representatives of the European Commission, the upcoming Spanish EU Presidency as well as representatives from civil society and the private sector. The Communication is supposed to cover all aspects of global health, addressing in particular global health equity, global health coherence and global health knowledge. In the meeting, the linkages between the lack of adequate access to basic health care in developing countries and the consequent high maternal mortality rates were discussed. This autumn, the Commission will hold public online consultations as part of the preparatory process toward the Communication, which will give SRHR advocates from all over the world the opportunity to provide substantial input. EU News: EU Presidency welcomes the creation of new UN women’s body

14 September

After the unanimous decision of the UN General Assembly to create a new body within the UN system to strengthen women's rights and development, the Swedish Presidency of the European Union welcomed the decision and recognized the key role of women to reach the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). In the past three years, the EU had been a major driving force in negotiations toward the establishment of this new body, merging the UN Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM), the Division for the Advancement of Women, the Office of the Special Advisor on Gender Issues and the UN International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women (UN-INSTRAW). SRH advocates hope that the new UN body will further strengthen the work on behalf of sexual and reproductive health and rights. More information on the EU’s position can be found here:
