EU News: Pro-SRHR party alliance loses majority in
the new European Parliament
7 June
The new composition of the European
Parliament (EP) might have significant consequences on how SRHR issues
will be handled at EU level in the coming five years, according to an
analysis of the European election outcome by the European Parliamentary
Forum on Population and Development (EPF). In the previous legislative
period, support for SRHR issues in the EP required a
socialist-liberal-green-left coalition that held an absolute majority in
votes. However, due to the manifest shift in favour of centre-right
parties in the new EP, the pro-SRHR alliance will have only 44% of votes
and will thus greatly depend on defectors from other parties. Once the
Committees on Development and Women’s Rights are in session, the new SRHR
champions among Parliamentarians can be identified. More information and
the whole EPF analysis can be accessed here: http://www.iepfpd.org/index.asp?ID=470
