Events and actions on Mother’s Night on the
9th of May by SRHR advocates in five participating European member states
(Belgium, the Netherlands, Malta, Hungary and Germany) turned out to be
very successful. DSW, as part of a project led by the World Population

EU News: European foundations discuss how to
strengthen health systems in poor countries
13 May
DSW helped organize and lead a lively
discussion among European foundations and NGOs about the prospects for
European philanthropic investment in micro-finance initiatives to
strengthen health systems and combat HIV/AIDS. Just prior to the European
Foundation Centre Annual General Assembly in Rome, the European HIV/AIDS
Funders Group panel session examined innovative approaches by the
International Finance Corporation, GFATM, Fondation Merieux and community
groups implementing private sector initiatives, microcredit programmes,
voucher systems, and community-based health insurance. Karen Hoehn,
Co-Chair of the European HIV/AIDS Funders Group facilitated the
discussion, along with EFG Co-chair Kate Harrison, HIV Coordinator at
Comic Relief. More information can be found here: http://www.efc.be/projects/aids/default.as

EU News: AidWatch report 2009 launched – In a time
of crises, European Aid has never been more important!
14 May
As developing countries face the full
impact of the economic crises, European governments are falling short by
nearly EUR 40bn on their aid promises, the new AidWatch report from
CONCORD-Europe reveals. AidWatch is a campaign which was born out of the
intention of European civil society organisations to keep the EU to
account on the quality and quantity of its aid to developing countries. At
the same time, the aid they provide should be both genuine (i.e. it should
represent a real transfer of resources from Europe to the South) and
quality aid which works for the poor. The main focus of the campaign is
the annual AidWatch report which features information on aid levels and
policies from all 27 member states and the European Commission. The report
and related information can be found here: http://www.concordeurope.org/Public/Page.php?ID=4.
