EU News: ACP-EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly adopts resolution on climate change with specific mention of effects on public health

4 April

During its 17th session held in Prague, the ACP-EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly adopted a resolution on the social and environmental consequences of climate change in ACP countries, acknowledging inter alia the connections of climate change and limited access to public healthcare as sources of vector- and water-borne diseases, such as malaria. The resolution explicitly calls on the European Commission and EU member states to provide more resources to strengthen health systems in ACP countries in order to cope with the adverse effects of climate change on health. EU News: World Health Day: EU Commissioner emphasizes global solidarity in health

7 April

The European Commissioner for Health Androulla Vassiliou spent World Health Day in Kenya, visiting different community health projects. In Nairobi, Ms. Vassiliou underlined that solidarity in health is a global issue and that, in order to achieve the health related MDGs, civil society work as well as EC cooperation with African partners remain crucial. EU News: European Commission publishes “April Package” on the impact of the financial crisis on development

8 April

One week after the G20 summit, DG Development of the European Commission published its 2009 spring communication “Supporting Developing Countries in Coping with the Crisis”. Together with four supporting working documents, one of them focusing on the effects of the crisis on the MDGs, this so-called “April Package” analyses the situation in developing countries and prospects for progress in light of the crisis. As an immediate response to the effects of the crisis, it proposes an increase rather than a decrease of ODA, particular attention to the most vulnerable developing countries and more effective aid. Upcoming Events: The Civil Society Policy Forum, accompanying the 2009 spring meetings of IMF and World Bank

23-26 April

Alongside the 2009 spring meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank in Washington, D.C., the IMF and WB Civil Society teams will organize the “Civil Society Policy Forum”. It will bring together staff from the two institutions, CSO representatives as well as government officials to debate topics such as the impacts of the global economic crisis and climate change on developing countries. The World Health Assembly of the WHO instituted World Malaria Day in 2007 as a day for the recognition of global efforts in combating and controlling malaria. This year’s World Malaria Day focuses on malaria as a global health problem. More information can be found here:

Resources: Action for Global Health Policy Report: “Health in Crisis”

7 April

The third report of Action for Global Health entitled “Health in Crisis” argues that the European Union and its Member States should now, despite the economic crisis, more than ever support the achievement of health related MDGs. Based on analyses of EU progress with regard to aid effectiveness and aid financing for health, Action for Global Health presents its recommendations for action, targeted at European decision-makers.
