Non-State Actors (NSA) and Local Authorities (LA) in Development: To strengthen the capacity of civil society organisations and local authorities in order to promote an inclusive and empowered society.

- In Equatorial Guinea, until: 24.04.2009, budget: 200,000 €.

EU News: EC reports on funding provided to CSOs

2 March

In December, the EC analyzed its funding to CSOs between the years 2000-2006. The following report, now available online, identifies a number of institutional disincentives that prevent this channel from being maximized strategically and effectively. In addition, the report makes a number of assessments about the CSO channel, noting the success CSOs have had in project implementation but questioning their sustainability. EU News: UNIFEM hosts the 2009 Commission on the Status of Women

2-13 March

The 53rd Session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) is currently being held at UN Headquarters in New York. The focus of CSW 2009 is on “The Equal Sharing of Responsibilities between Women and Men, including Caregiving in the Context of HIV/AIDS.” Main topics sponsored by UNIFEM include “Promoting Sexual and Reproductive Empowerment” as well as gender mainstreaming and social equity. In addition to the main events, there are several parallel workshops co-organized with other UN agencies, NGOs, governments and partners in the context of the CSW. For more information, visit:

EU News: UNICEF presents the 2009 State of the World’s Children report

3 March

UNICEF, the European Parliament and the European Commission held a joint conference to present UNICEF’s 2009 edition of “The State of the World’s Children” report, which focuses on strengthening maternal and neonatal health. The report mentions a number of policies, programmes and partnerships aimed at improving maternal and neonatal health, but emphasizes that pregnancy and childbirth remain one of the greatest health risks for women worldwide. Upcoming Events: "Rethinking Global Health: Political and practical challenges from foreign and security policy"

10-11 March

An international conference is being organized in London by Chatham House, in collaboration with the European Council, on the issue of Global Health. The conference will debate fundamental questions such as “Who is defining and driving the global health agenda?” and “How are we responding to the phenomenon of counterfeit medicines?” Policy makers and experts are invited to the conference to discuss the integration of global health with the foreign policies of government, international organizations and civil society. Upcoming Events: EC Consultation Workshop "Financing of health systems and social protection in health in developing countries"

23-24 March

The EC is scheduling a consultation workshop with ACP countries to help prepare a draft EU policy (called "Communication") on financing of health systems and social protection in health. The workshop will take place in Brussels, with up to 80 participants from ACP countries and European participants, to share their experiences and technical knowledge of health systems.
