EU News: EU Development Ministers commit to aid goals

30 January

An informal meeting of EU Development ministers was held in Prague to discuss issues of democratic governance, sustainable energy and consequences of the financial crisis on developing nations. Development ministers have decided that the financial crisis should not interfere with EU commitments to development cooperation funding, and that the EU will maintain its goal to provide 0.56% of its total Gross National Income in aid to developing countries by 2010. More information from the meeting is available from the Czech Presidency website:

EU News: Internal EC evaluation on aid delivery through CSOs

4 February 2009

To support the need for greater aid effectiveness and a more participatory development model, the EC has conducted an internal evaluation of its aid delivery commitments and implementation practices. While clearly confirming the added-value of civil society organizations (CSOs) on the ground, the report also contains a number of recommendations to improve its own aid delivery, such as providing greater capacity development for CSOs in addition to promoting partnerships. The entire evaluation report will be available online soon.

Upcoming Events: Hearing on International Property Rights and Access to Medicines.

17 February

There will be an expert meeting held in the European Parliament on the subject of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) and how it could affect affordable access to medicines. The meeting is in regards to current trade negotiations between the EU and the countries of the former Andean Community which would strictly enforce IPR, raising concerns over the sustained availability of affordable generic brands for essential medicines. More information on the expert meeting can be found at the EU Coherence Project website:
