EU News: European Commission speaks up on female genital mutilation

5 February
Within the framework of this year’s International Day of Zero Tolerance against Female Genital Mutilation, European Commissioners Ferrero-Waldner (External Relations) and Michel (Development), spoke up against the practice: “Violating the rights of women or girls can never be justified on grounds of cultural relativism or in the name of tradition”."

EU News: Young people advocate for Sexuality Education in the South in the European Parliament

10-12 February
During a two days training facilitated by DSW and Youact, a group of more than 20 youth and adults received training in order to become more effective reproductive health advocates towards the European Parliament. A hearing entitled “sexual and reproductive health and rights of young people: the need for comprehensive sexuality education in the south” took place the day after. The meeting was chaired by Kathalijne Maria Buitenweg MEP.

EU News: European Parliament: New HIV/AIDS research findings presented

13 February
Stop AIDS Alliance and the European Parliamentary Forum on Population and Development organised a hearing in the European Parliament, entitled ‘Horizons’ research findings on HIV/AIDS’. The meeting, kindly hosted by Anne Van Lancker MEP, brought together policy makers, experts and advocates to discuss key findings in: The role of communities in addressing HIV/AIDS; HIV prevention amongst key populations, including sex workers, men who have sex with men, and HIV-positive individuals; Reducing stigma in communities and institutions.

The Association of European Parliamentarians for Africa (AWEPA) together with the European Parliament, the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI) and the Society for International Development (SID) is organising an EU Presidency Seminar on Africa on 27 and 28 February 2008 in the European Parliament in Brussels, entitled: “The Role of New EU Member States in EU-Africa Development Policy”.
