EU News: Launch of the “Global Malaria Action Plan”

25 September

The Roll Back Malaria (RBM) partnership has released their “Global Malaria Action Plan,” a three-part global strategy for the control and elimination of malaria. The plan has received broad support from high-level government, religious and civil society representatives, and aims to provide full, universal coverage of malaria interventions by 2010, and to dramatically reduce the number of malaria cases and deaths by 2015. EU News: DSW Speaks in European Parliament on Women's Rights

14 October

At the invitation of European Parliamentarian Kathalijne Buitenweg, DSW's Vice Executive Director, Karen Hoehn, joined a distinguished panel of speakers in a hearing in the European Parliament regarding the merits of creating an EU Special Envoy on Women's Rights. Other speakers included Benita Ferrero-Waldner, European Commissioner for External Relations; Elisabeth Rehn (member of the Global Leadership Foundation, former Minister, MEP, UN under Secretary General); four Members of the European Parliament and a speaker from Action Aid International. The conference aimed to promote and further define the role of a possible new Special Envoy for Women’s Rights. For more information on the initiative and its petition, please visit:

Upcoming Events: Conference on “The Future of Parliamentary Involvement in Global Health and Development”

20 October

Hosted by the Belgian All Party Parliamentary Group, Action for Global Health, as well as AFME and Sensoa, this conference on the new aid architecture and ways to fund and achieve the MDGs will be held in Brussels on the 20th of October. Karen Hoehn, the Vice-Executive Director of DSW, will be one of the speakers at the conference, which will emphasize the role of parliamentarians in developing an effective dialogue, debate and promotion of global health issues in their respective political environments.

Upcoming Events: Informative Session on "Innovative Funding Mechanisms: Bridging the funding gap to achieve the MDGs”

21 October

The European Alliance against Malaria, with the kind support of the French Permanent Representation to the EU, is organizing an informative session to be held on Tuesday 21 October in Brussels. The session will explore the existing funding environment and look at new innovative funding opportunities, such as the Affordable Medicines Facility for Malaria (AMFm). Key speakers at the session will be Dr. Jorge Bermudez, Executive Secretary of UNITAID, as well as senior advisors of the Global Fund and Roll Back Malaria.

Upcoming Events: ReProductive Aid Global Video Conference

29 October

ReProductive Aid is an internet-based global community of civil society representatives networking, learning, sharing experiences and strategizing effective ways to address SRH in the new development aid “architecture”. The initiative will culminate in a web-based Global Video Forum on the 29th of October, which will connect participants through the internet and in meeting sites in Europe, Africa and Asia to identify important themes, create networks and catalyze human and financial resources for global SRHR. Upcoming Events: Consultative session on the progress report for “Programme for Action to Confront HIV/AIDS, Malaria and Tuberculosis”

25-26 November

The EC is currently preparing a progress report on their 2007-2011 “Programme for Action.” As part of this process, the EC will be holding a consultation opportunity with civil society, the private sector and the African Union on the 25th and 26th of November in Brussels, followed by a second opportunity in the first week of December at ICASA, in Dakar.
