EU News: World Leaders pledge $16 Billion for MDG's including Malaria

25 September

From the 22nd to 26th of September, the United Nations hosted a High-level summit on the Millennium Development Goals, bringing together representatives of government, business and civil society to evaluate and accelerate the world’s progress towards achieving the MDGs on schedule. Among the results of the meeting, $3 billion has been pledged towards eliminating Malaria, $500 million towards the Global Fund and an extra $9 billion to be spent by 2015 towards affecting MDG 4 and 5: amounting to a $16 billion package to fund a number of health, education, food and water security initiatives. You can view Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon’s closing statements and summary of the summit here:

EU News: “Euromapping 2008” study released

29 September

DSW, together with the European Parliamentary Forum (EPF), released “Euromapping 2008”, a study of EU development aid over the past year. According to the study, funding for family planning and basic reproductive health services in poor countries fell by 7.8% from 2007, a loss of more than 160 Million USD. In addition to identifying trends in ODA spending, the study compared ODA contributions from all EU and non-EEA countries: the least performing countries in terms of ODA spending per capita were Portugal, Italy, Austria and Greece, contributing less than US$1 per annum; while the ‘best performer’ in ODA spending was Norway, contributing as much as US$ 41. Based on these findings, DSW and EPF call on European decision-makers to affirm their commitments to increase ODA spending; assistance that is essential to help the 200 million women unable to access family planning services. The full “Euromapping 2008” study, along with specific country profiles, are available online at:!

Upcoming Events: ReProductive Aid Global Civil Society Forum

6-10 October

ReProductive Aid is an internet-based global community of civil society representatives networking, learning, and strategizing effective ways to address SRH in the new development aid architecture. The forum began with a series of online discussions on how civil society can influence donors at the country-level. The next discussion is scheduled for the week of 6-10 October, the topic of which will be “Budget Support and Reproductive Health”. The initiative will culminate in a web-based Global Video Forum at the end of October, which will connect participants through the internet and in meeting sites in Europe, Africa and Asia to identify important themes, create networks and catalyze human and financial resources for global SRHR.
To participate in the online discussions, or to learn more about the initiative and the Global Video Forum, you can visit the following website:

The conference intends to discuss policy recommendations on international development for German and international actors alike.
