EU News: The European Commission launches the
research paper “Millennium Development Goals at Midpoint: Where do we
stand?”
19 September
The EC has released its research
paper on the current state of the MDGs, reflecting upon the progress
achieved thus far in cutting global poverty in half. The report notes that
although achieving the MDGs by 2015 are in reach, “most countries in all
regions are off-track on most MDGs.” Although the report does not
catalogue the progress of all MDGs, it does cite a few examples:
particularly, there has been virtually no clear progress in the reduction
of child mortality (MDG4) and this is especially true in the poorest
regions of the world. The report instead focuses on issues associated with
economic growth, domestic policies and aid delivery in reducing poverty.

Malaria
18 September
The World Malaria Report 2008 claims:
“Half of the world’s population is at risk of malaria, and an estimated
250 million cases led to nearly 1 million deaths in 2006”. The continued
support for funding and initiatives for malaria control and treatment are
instrumental in continuing towards achieving the Millennium Development
Goals on maternal and infant mortality and infectious diseases. See: http://www.who.int/malaria/wmr2008/malaria2008.pdf

Upcoming Events: UN High-level summit in New York
City on the Millennium Development Goals
22-26 September
This summit is centered on
evaluating the world’s progress towards achieving the Millennium
Development Goals set in 2000. Although much has been done over the past
seven years towards eradicating poverty, there remain gaps and weaknesses
in the world’s efforts. Among the most distressing findings, there has
been little success in reducing infant and maternal mortality in most
developing countries, and especially in some of the poorest regions of the
world such as sub-Saharan Africa. World leaders and international
stakeholders will converge on New York City for the forum to discuss the
World’s progress, identify barriers, and commit towards an accelerated
plan of action for the next seven years. http://www.un.org/millenniumgoals/2008highlevel/
