European Instrument for Democracy and Human Rights: To combat violence against women and to assist children in conflict with law.
- In Burundi, until 07.10.2008, budget : 600,000 €.

European Instrument for Democracy and Human Rights : To strengthen the role of civil society in promoting human rights.
- Belarus, until 31.10.2008, budget: 300,000 €.

Community Development through Village Initiatives: To improve the quality of life in rural communities.
- In the northern part of Cyprus, until 15.10.2008, budget: 5,000,000 €.

Support to Food Security for Women and Rural Poor in Lao PDR
- In Laos, until 26.01.2009, budget: not published yet.

Institution Building and Partnership Programme: To support civil society organisations and local authorities in order to enable them to develop a participatory approach.
- In Uzbekistan, until 31.10.2008, budget: 1,430,000 €.

Support to initiatives of non state actors regarding good governance, democratic principles and gender equality.
- Comoros, until 09.10.2008, budget : 250 000 000 KMF

EU News: Development Committee of the European Parliament (DEVE) votes for €10 million extra for health in developing countries

1 September

Socialist MEP Thijs Berman’s amendment, which requests a €10 million increase for health in developing countries, was voted in favour by DEVE. “Other aspects of social and human development” and gender should be allocated almost €3 million extra, according to that committee.
Beginning of October the Budget Committee will vote and after that the plenary of the European Parliament. Later you can find the amendments here:

EU News: Plenary of the European Parliament adopted a motion for a resolution on maternal mortality

3 September

The motion for a Resolution ahead of the UN High Level Event 25 September review of the MDGs, points to the fact that MDG5 on maternal health “has fallen furthest adrift of its target” and is particularly not achieved by developing countries in Africa. 394 MEPs voted in favour, 182 against. Upcoming Events: European Parliament Working Group on Reproductive Health, HIV/AIDS and Development (EPWG) meets on UNGASS

17 September

Together with UNAIDS and Stop AIDS Alliance (SAA), the EPWG will feature the three EU Institutions, civil society and UN Agencies discussing how to move forward with implementing the UN High Level Meeting on HIV/AIDS (UNGASS) 2008 and the XVII International AIDS Conference in Mexico outcomes in the EU context in a special meeting from 15.00 – 17.00. The draft of this study hardly deals with MDG5 but rather focuses on the correlation between economic growth and poverty reduction and also discusses the influence of domestic policies and aid on MDGs outcomes. The document is also available on DG Dev website at the following address:

Resources: Accra Agenda for Action

4 September

Ministers of developing and donor countries responsible for promoting development and heads of multilateral and bilateral development institutions endorsed this agenda which mentions that “1.4 billion people—most of them women and girls—still live in extreme poverty, and access to safe drinking water and health care remains a major issue in many parts of the world”.
