EU News: The European Council’s Agenda for action on
the Millennium Development Goals does not include any clear financial
commitments
19-20 June
“The EU as a global partner for
pro-poor and pro-growth development: EU Agenda for Action on MDGs",
mentions that: “the EU will urgently support the attainment of the target
set in 2005 regarding universal access to reproductive health” (see nEUws
107). Very vague criteria on financing say that “if the EU proportion of
aid flow remained constant at 60% (which implies a scaling-up of aid by
other donors), and the related share of the sector remained, this would
mean the EU would increase its support by € 8 billion by 2010, of which
almost €6 billion would be for Africa.” That contribution will then be
expected to contribute to 75 million more bednets in Africa and the EU
would then also further support the Global Fund to fight Aids,
Tuberculosis and Malaria, as well as UNITAID. http://www.eu2008.si/en/News_and_Documents/Fact-summit-JUNE/0616_EC_Priloga.pdf

Africa
8 July
This declaration welcomes the “The Toyako
Framework for Action on Global Health”, a report report submitted by our
health experts including matrices, showing G8 implementation of past
commitments to ensure accountability. See: http://www.g8summit.go.jp/doc/pdf/0708_09_en.pdf The
declaration notes that “Reproductive health should be made widely
accessible. The G8 will take concrete steps to work toward improving the
link between HIV/AIDS activities and sexual and reproductive health and
voluntary family planning programs”. On Malaria the Declaration says the
G8 “will continue to expand access to long-lasting insecticide treated
nets, with a view to providing 100 million nets through bilateral and
multilateral assistance, in partnership with other stakeholders by the end
of 2010.” http://www.g8summit.go.jp/eng/doc/doc080709_03_en.html

unacceptably high in many developing countries: with more than 500 000
women dying each year from treatable and preventable complications
relating to pregnancy and childbirth”. The recommendations urge EU Member
States to dramatically “step up efforts and funding so as to ensure
universal access to sexual and reproductive health information and
services, which are essential for the attainment of the health MDGs,
gender equality and the fight against poverty.” Please find the
recommendations at: http://www.europarl.europa.eu/sides/getDoc.do?pubRef=-//EP//TEXT+TA+20080709+TOC+DOC+XML+V0//EN&language=E
