European Instrument for Democracy and Human Rights: To assist civil society to develop greater cohesion in working on human rights, political pluralism and democratic political participation and representation.
- In Croatia, until: 04.09.2008, budget: 1,164,000 €.
- In Mexico, until: 18.08.2008, budget: 442,728 €.
- In Nigeria, until: 27.08.2008, budget: 900,000 €.
- In Sudan, until: 31.08.2008, budget: 900,000 €.
- In Uganda, until 28.08.2008, budget: 600,000 €.

Audiovisual projects for television: To produce and disseminate TV programmes raising awareness in the field of development.
- In Europe, until: 06.10.2008, budget: 1,500,000 €.

Supporting measures for the road construction Moundou – Doba - Koumra – Sarh: To reduce HIV/AIDS and STIs among border communities.

EU News: The EU and the US reaffirm their commitment to double Official Development Assistance to Africa

10 June

As mentioned in the Summit Declaration in Slovenia, the EU and the US have reaffirmed their commitment to improve aid effectiveness and meet the Millennium Development Goals. In particular, to increase aid for Africa doubling official development assistance to Africa by 2010 compared to 2004: “We pledge our commitment to help realize Africa’s development potential; combat infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS and malaria; foster human rights, democracy, and good governance”. EU News: The EU Presidencies statement at the UN High Level meeting on HIV/AIDS asks for compromise on Sexual and Reproductive Rights

10-11 June

The EU Presidency’s statement also reaffirmed its focus on HIV prevention, which remains “the cornerstone for all other activities within the comprehensive approach to tackle HIV/AIDS” and the importance to target young people and to improve the universal access to prevention, treatment, care and support. Upcoming Events: European Council Meeting

19-20 June

The next meeting of the European Council will most probably discuss the Millennium Development Goals’ (MDGs) Action plan (see nEUws 105). DSW and partners worked with the European Commission to specifically mentions MDG 5 on maternal mortality in the action plan (the latest draft indeed does so) and looks at possible means of accelerating efforts to achieve this goal. Resources: Progress report on universal access to health highlights the main obstacles to achieve MDG’s

The WHO, UNFPA and UNICEF launched this new progress report warning that an estimated 6.7 million people are still in need of treatment, and that there were 2.5 million new HIV infections last year. The report highlights the obstacles to achieving universal access and the Millennium Development Goals including: weak health systems and a shortage in health workers.
