EU News: European Commission urges member states to
raise development aid
4 April
The Commission today called on member
states to increase aid levels for the poorest countries, following the
official announcement of the 2007 figures by the OECD. Jose Manuel Barroso
said that member states should set out clearly what they are prepared to
spend on aid, year by year, until 2015. He considered that this will be an
important subject for the European Council in June and for the G8 in
July. http://europa.eu/rapid/pressReleasesAction.do?reference=IP/08/548&format=HTML&aged=0&language=EN&guiLanguage=en

towards the Millennium Development Goals. It states that according to
very weak human development indicators, especially child and maternal
mortality, the 2015 objectives are unlikely to be met. The Communication
also notes that the number of people dying from HIV has only slightly
declined and that AIDS remains among the leading causes of deaths globally
and the primary cause of deaths in Africa. http://ec.europa.eu/development/services/news_en.cfm#newsDGdev
