EU News: Negotiations of the EU budget 2008 a success for health

25 October
After DSW and its partners informed the key players in the current EU budget negotiations on the importance of an increase in health funding for developing countries, the European Parliament voted in favour of a EUR 9m increase for 2008. DSW also supported a specific budget amendment on SRH, which unfortunately did not pass the plenary vote.

EU News: Round table confirms World Bank's support for SRH

25 October
The World Bank's Brussels office held a round table on strengthening health systems. Julian Schweitzer, the Bank's Director for Health, Nutrition and Population, presented the Bank's recent health strategy. The ensuing discussion focused on the general strengthening of health systems; the International Health Partnership and the unclear role of the EU division of labour therein; the importance of North-South advocacy and the issue of charging small fees for health services in developing countries. Schweitzer described himself as an "enthusiastic supporter of sexual and reproductive health".

EU News: ACP Health Ministers debate Brussels Declaration

25-26 October
The first-ever meeting of the health ministers of the African, Caribbean and Pacific Group of States (the ACP Group) took place in Brussels. The ministers debated the Brussels Declaration on Health for Sustainable Development in ACP States, as well as a corresponding framework for action. Sexual and reproductive health issues featured prominently in the draft. Once available, the final version of the declaration will be excellent advocacy tool for civil society to hold ACP governments to account.
