Calls for Proposals
The calls on the following European Commission budget lines are usually open for organizations and projects interested in SRHR. For further details on any of these calls or corrigenda see the EuropeAid website.
The Food Security Programme seeks to improve food security by addressing availability and accessibility of food for vulnerable populations.
Zambia, until 04.07.2007, budget: € 2,000,000 (including a specific focus on People living with HIV/AIDS).
Euro-Med Youth III Programme aims to promote young people’s active citizenship and a sense of solidarity, as well as enhance the contribution of non-governmental youth organisations to civil society and democracy.
Israel: forecast, budget € 340,000.
Lebanon: until 19.06.2007, budget: € 275,000.
Morocco: until 11.06.2007, budget: € 585,000.

Informal Meeting of EU Health Ministers: Improving the Crossborder Healthcare Services and Progress in HIV/AIDS Prevention
19 April 2007
Before the informal council meeting of Health ministers during the German EU Presidency in Aachen, Ulla Schmidt, German Federal Minister of Health declares commitment to solving cross-border healthcare service problems for patients and hopes for further progress in tackling HIV/AIDS, especially prevention activities, as agreed recently in Bremen conference (nEUws 82).

EU Commissioner Louis Michel urged to include health representation issues in Civil Society Contact Group
19 April 2007
Following a recent "Open Civil Society Forum", EU Develpment Commissioner Louis Michel proposed candidates for a Civil Society Contact group to be established for more regular EC dialogue with CSOs. DSW, together with IPPF EN, MSI, the StopAIDS Alliance and the Red Cross / EU Offfice, have replied to the Commissioner’s proposal by urging that the group include an organisation which can address long-term health development and systems issues.

Upcoming Events
Civil Society and Joint EU-Africa Strategy
23-24 April 2007
Civil society consultation on the Joint EU-Africa Strategy, which is to be decided under the upcoming Portuguese EU presidency, is going into a next round. In a two-day meeting, CSOs from North and South will discuss content and next steps on the strategy together with EU
and AU representatives. DSW will take part in the meeting to ensure that crucial health topics such as sexual and reproductive health and malaria are included in the discussions.

European Parliament Discusses HIV/AIDS in the EU and the Neighbouring Countries

In an own-initiative report for the Environment, Public Health and
Food Safety Committee (ENVI) of the European Parliament, members of
that Parliament stress the need to renew efforts to combat AIDS, not
only within the EU but in neighbouring countries, too.

The MDGs: Lessons from the Past for the Future

The European Parliament’s Working Group on Reproductive Health, HIV/
AIDS and Development in the European Parliament (EPWG) challenges
MEPs, European Commission officials, ACP Ambassadors and civil
society to an open discussion and stock-taking of the current MDG
situation, progress achieved and further steps needed so that the
objectives are achieved within the agreed timeframe, particularly the
3 health MDGs.

USA: Global Gag Rule Rescinded |
|
Today, US-American president Barack Obama rescinded "The Mexico City Policy", also known as the “Global Gag Rule”. First imposed by the Reagan Administration in 1984, this policy directed the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to withhold funds from foreign NGOs that provide abortion information or counselling to women or lobbied foreign governments to legalise or make abortion available.
