EP Declaration on Obstetric Fistula

The European Parliament Working Group on Reproductive Health together with DSW, MSI, EPF and UNFPA welcomed 55 participants at an EP hearing on obstetric fistula (see nEUws issues 79-80) an issued a declaration, which is in the process of being signed by Parliamentarians. Find the declaration here.
International Day for Zero Tolerance of Female Genital Mutilation

The European Commission (EC) stated that it seizes every opportunity to take Female Genital Mutilation to its political dialogue with partners in developing countries and finds campaigning once a year is not enough. Contradicting this political statement, current drafts of EC country strategy papers reflect a near absence of health issues, and sexual and reproductive health appears to have been eliminated from the EC 2007 budget. German Development Minister Wieczorek-Zeul seeks to better harmonize EU development policy

German Development Minister Heidemarie Wieczorek-Zeul presented a study "Towards a Division of Labour in European Development Cooperation: Operational Options", initiated by the German EU Presidency in collaboration with the other members of the presidency team, Portugal and Slovenia. The study investigates ways of improving European aid effectiveness. More here.
The European Union and the African Union launch consultation process on a Joint EU-Africa Strategy February 2007
The European Union and the African Union have developed a joint partnership strategy to be adopted at the EU/Africa summit in Lisbon in the second half of 2007. Initial ideas from the consultation will be delivered to the official dialogue at the EU-Africa Expert Meeting in Brussels on February 19-23. We encourage the SRH community to participate. International Women's Day at the European Parliament

The EP Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality has scheduled a hearing entitled "1957 - 2007: the European Union and the advancement of women. Women building the Future of Europe" on 08 March 2007. Speakers include EP President Hans-Gert Poettering, Germany's Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development Heidemarie Wieczorek-Zeul, and European Commission President José Manuel Durão Barroso.
