Calls for Proposals
The Calls on the following European Commission budget lines are usually open for organizations and projects interested in SRHR. For further details on any of these Calls or corrigenda see the EuropeAid website.
EIDHR projects aim to maximize the effectiveness, impact and visibility of actions undertaken in support of the protection and promotion of human rights and democratization in:
Tajikistan, forecast, Budget: € 150,000.
The Food Security Programme 2006 seeks to improve food security by addressing availability and accessibility of food at household, local and national level (a focus on HIV/AIDS is explicitly mentioned).
Malawi, until 07.05.2007, Budget: € 10,700,000.
Strengthening civil society aims to improve the capacity of local NGOs working in the field of poverty alleviation.
Guinea Bissau, until 26.04.2007, Budget € 470,000.
Programme to support women, young people and vulnerable populations promotes participatory processes for sustainable development in order to reach socio-economic, cultural and political conditions that make peace possible.
Colombia, until 29.03.2007, Budget: € 511,500.
Colombia, until 27.04.2007, Budget € 1,705,000.

EP Review of Latin-America and Asia Country Strategy Papers
29 January 2007
The European Parliament (EP) Development committee (DEVE) has reviewed most Country Strategy Papers (CSPs) of Latin-America and Asia, finding hardly any focusing on health. Most focus on trade.
DEVE committee members questioned references to anti-terrorism measures in several CSPs.

Executive Director Candidates of Global Fund Urged to Focus on SRH
1 February 2007
Executive Director candidates for the Geneva-based Global Fund to fight AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis received a letter urging better integration of sexual and reproductive health and rights. Thirty organisations around the world endorsed this letter initiated by Interact Worldwide and DSW.

European Parliament Votes for Committee Chairs and Vice-Chairs

Chairs and vice-chairs of committees have been elected for the second half of the present Parliament's term, which runs until the next election in June 2009. The following committee chairs are important for sexual and reproductive health and rights: Foreign Affairs: Jacek SARYUSZ-WOLSKI (EPP-ED, PL); Development: Josep BORRELL FONTELLES (PES, ES); Women's Rights and Gender Equality: Anna ZÁBORSKÁ (EPP-ED, SK). USA: Global Gag Rule Rescinded |
|
Today, US-American president Barack Obama rescinded "The Mexico City Policy", also known as the “Global Gag Rule”. First imposed by the Reagan Administration in 1984, this policy directed the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to withhold funds from foreign NGOs that provide abortion information or counselling to women or lobbied foreign governments to legalise or make abortion available.
