ACP-EU Summit in Khartoum
7 December 2006
A summit between the European Union (EU) and African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) nations, focusing on "United for peace, solidarity and sustainable development” took place amidst fierce speculation over the fate of trade agreements. In the summit's outcome declaration, ACP heads of state and government reaffirm their commitment “to promote maternal health by reducing maternal mortality through sharing best practices and information, and we therefore call upon the international community to reinforce their efforts and mobilization of resources for health systems in our countries.” More here: www.5thacpsummit.gov.sd/.
EU Health Strategy – public consultation

The European Commission (EC) has launched a discussion document inviting stakeholders to comment on the new EU Health Strategy. This overarching, strategic framework will focus on core issues for improving health in the EU, mainstreaming health in other community policies, and will cover global health issues. Provide comments on the document to email: Sanco-Future-Health-Strategy@ec.europa.eu until 12 February 2007. More here.
EP vote on SRHR references in the DCI
12 December 2006
The European Parliament's (EP) Common Position on the Development Cooperation Instrument (DCI) contains three references to the need to financially support sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) in geographic and thematic programmes. EPP-ED MEP Gay Mitchell submitted amendments deleting reference to SRHR, but was voted down during the EP’s plenary session in Strasbourg. More on the EP plenary sessions here.
