European Commission proposes measures to enhance Governance
30 August 2006
The EC has adopted a Communication on “Governance in the European Consensus on Development: towards a harmonized approach within the European Union” and set aside an incentive envelope of EUR 3 billion on this purpose for the African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP)countries. For the first time, in the context of the new European Development Consensus, the Commission is proposing to the EU a common approach to governance. More information here.
EP Development Committee Meeting 28 August 2006 The European Parliament Development Committee met for the first time after summer recess and adopted a report, “More and better cooperation: the 2006 EU aid effectiveness package” in which it recalls the EU Member States' commitment on reaching the ODA target of 0.7% of GNP by 2015 while rejecting "creative accounting". In its conclusions of April 10/11, 2006 the European Council had supported allocating 50% of the increases in development aid to Africa, but this will depend on Member States' contributions, which will finance between 80 and 90% of the future increases in EU aid. In its next meeting on September 04, 2006 in Strasbourg, the Committee will vote over the Budget 2007 and the proposed ammendments. Find all documents debated in the Committee Meeting here.
