ACP-EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly 22 June 2006 The Joint Parliament Assembly (JPA) of representatives from 78 African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) countries and 78 Members of European Parliament (MEPs) adopted five separate resolutions. Delegates urged the ACP States to further integrate public health into their national economic and social development strategies, including through networks for disease surveillance, response, control, prevention and treatment, information exchange and recruitment, training and retention of national public health personnel. http://www.europarl.europa.eu/intcoop/acp/60_11/default_en.htm
European Council Meeting 15 – 16 June 2006 The European Council gathered Heads of States and Government to discuss among other subjects the declaration on Africa. The Council welcomed progress made on the new external action instruments and the decision taken by the EU and the ACP partners at the Joint Council of Ministers regarding the Financial Protocol for 10th EDF covering 2008-2013 (see nEUws edition 68). The EU stresses the importance of current and future initiatives to put an EU-Africa partnership on migration and development in place. Symposium on Sexual Violence 21-23 June 2006 In a symposium sponsored by the Government of Belgium, the EC and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), delegates from more than 30 countries called on governments, international organizations and civil society for urgent action to prevent and respond to sexual violence in conflict and post-conflict areas and to prioritize this issue in all humanitarian, peace building and development efforts. Finnish EU Presidency Finland's six-month EU Presidency began on 1 July 2006. On 2 and 3 July, the Finnish Government met all the 25 members of the European Commission in Helsinki to discuss the agenda for Finland's EU Presidency. WHO Report links environment with health problems 20 June 2006
DSW attended the Brussels launch of the new World Health Organization's report "Preventing disease through healthy environments — towards an estimate of the environmental burden of disease" which shows that tackling environmental risks could save up to four million lives a year.
