ACP-EU Council of Ministers Meeting 07 June 2006 The ACP-EC Council of Ministers met in Papua New Guinea on 1-2 June 2006 and agreed upon a financial package of over EUR 24 billion for the 10th EDF from 2008 to 2013. DSW worked closely with the StopAIDS Alliance and other NGOs to mobilize European and ACP civil society by writing ACP Ambassadors and Ministers to urge regional and country allocations for human and social development, in particular HIV/AIDS, SRH, children and gender equality.
Strengthening the EU's External action 08 June 2006 The European Commission has approved the Communication “Europe in the World: Some Practical Proposals for Greater Coherence, Effectiveness and Visibility”. This paper seeks to examine how, within the present Treaty context, the EU can address the external challenges facing Europe using the available internal and external policies more coherently and effectively. Finish EU Presidency Finland has established a website in preparation for its upcoming EU Presidency: http://www.eu2006.fi/en_GB/ Professor Puska, Director-General of the Finnish National Public Health Institute/ Ministry of Social Affairs & Health, says in an interview that ‘health in all policies' will be the general and main health topic of the upcoming Finish EU Presidency. UNGASS 31 May – 02 June 2006 The EU Presidency used the opportunity of the high-level meeting on the third day of the United Nations General Assembly Special Session on HIV/AIDS to call for greater linkages of sexual and reproductive health with HIV/AIDS and Sexual Transmittable Infections services, as well as for a strong involvement of SRH organisations in the prevention and treatment process: http://www.eu2006.at/en/News/Statements_in_International_Organisations/UN/0206AIDS.html.

Health Council adopts conclusion on women's health 1-2 June 2006 While women's health is a priority of the Austrian Presidency, the Health Council stresses the importance of gender as key determinant of health. The Council invites Member States to promote health and prevent disease taking into account gender difference and invites the Commission to assist Member States in developing effective strategies to reduce health inequalities with a gender dimension. Upcoming Events
ACP-EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly 17-22 June 2006 The 11th session of the Joint Parliamentary Assembly (JPA) will take place in Vienna, Austria. The JPA brings together 77 MEPs and an equal number of elected representatives of the ACP countries. Its central objective is to reduce and eventually to eradicate poverty; their key role is to promote human rights, democracy and solidarity. Louis Michel, European Commissioner for Development and Humanitarian Aid, will represent the Commission. The Global Campaign for Microbicides opens a remarkable exhibit on Monday 19th June at the Austria Centre. EP Plenary Meeting 06 July 2006 Following Anne Van Lancker's oral question to the Commission in the plenary session of 13 June on the inclusion of HIV/AIDS into the broad thematic programme for human and social developments and its funding, MEPs are planning a joint statement on that subject at the next plenary session to influence the negotiations of the 10th EDF.
