Budget deal reached for 2007-2013 05 April 2006 A deal reached on the long-term EU budget allocated an extra €4 billion in funding to the €862.4 billion agreed in December. MEPs had wanted an extra €12 billion but the deal was nonetheless broadly welcomed by most of the political groups and President Josep Borrell. Most of the new funds are for internal EU activities, including €1 billion for the citizenship subheading (which includes youth and health), and 200 million was added for the European Neighborhood & Partnership Instrument. The deal also increases EP scrutiny of decisions on external policy.
European NGOs blow the whistle on misleading European Aid figures 03 April 2006 A coalition of NGOs argue that EU countries are inflating their aid figures by a third. New research coordinated by Eurodad reveals that a total of €12.5 billion of EU aid in 2005 was spent on debt cancellation, housing refugees and educating foreign students in European countries instead of giving new resources to poor countries to fight poverty. See: http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/L03108608.htm or read the full briefing “EU aid: genuine leadership or misleading figures?”.
MEPs back report on development aid and the fight against corruption 08 April 2006 MEPs are calling for a blacklist of regimes and representatives of corrupt governments in order to improve the effectiveness of the EU's development policy. The report calls on all EU members for greater accountability and openness in EU aid programmes. Link.
