SRH Challenges in Africa
16 & 17 March 2006
DSW joined its colleague NGOs at a Roundtable Discussion on Sexual and Reproductive Health in Brussels on the 16th of March organized by the World Bank, which provided civil society input for the Meeting of ACP-Ambassadors with their EU Counterparts on the 17th of March.
Roundtable speakers included were Ms. Lena Sund, representing the European Commission's DG Development, Mr. Khama Rogo, the Lead Health Sector Specialist from the World Bank, and Mr. Tewodros Melesse, the IPPF Africa regional director. As an outcome of this meeting, a
Communique re-affirms the importance of placing SRH issues at the forefront of development cooperation efforts. Read the Communique.
Increased role of EC in the Global Fund to fight HIV/AIDS, TB and Malaria

The European Commission will further increase its pivotal role and visibility in the Global Fund to fight HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria by assuming the Vice Chairmanship of the Board. Dr. Lieve Fransen, Head of the Human and Social Development Unit in DG Development, has been elected to this post. Read more here.
Splitting Development and Economic cooperation in EU Financial

The Development Committee adopted its report on establishing a Development Co-operation Instrument that splits the Commission's proposed Development Co-operation and Economic Co-operation Instrument into two separate instruments with the Development Co-operation Instrument being dedicated to the EC's co-operation with developing countries. The report of the Development Committee will now be presented to the EP Plenary for adoption as the Parliament's first reading under the co-decision procedure in April.
Differences in Women's health status across the EU

A report published by the European Institute of Women's Health (EIWH) reviews the state of women's health in the EU-25 and discovers substantial differences in their exposures to health risks, including their reproductive health and access to healthcare across Europe. Conference with Louis Michel

Michel, European Commissioner for Development and Humanitarian Aid, spoke at a conference for social cohesion in the dialog of the EU, Latin America and the Caribbean. He included the promotion of Gender Equality as well as Civil Society Participation. See the whole speech (in French).
