European Parliament Adopts Report to Tackle Poverty among Women

The EP has adopted a report written by Slovakian MEP and Chairwoman of the Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality, Anna Záborská. The report focuses on combating poverty amongst women and overcoming the wage and employment gap. Weblink.
European Commission Adopts New Africa Strategy

The strategy calls on all member states to support Africa with regards to achieving the MDG's. Furthermore it “proposes a strategic partnership fro security and development between the European Union and Africa for the coming decade”. European Commission Launches Plan D

The European Commission has launched a Plan D standing for democracy, dialogue and debate. The new plan is aimed at encouraging public debates in Member States with regard to the future of Europe. This comes at a time when mistrust in the Union is on the rise, especially in France and Holland. Weblink.
EU meets AU

On Tuesday Javier SOLANA, High Representative of the EU for the Common Foreign and Security Policy met the Chairman of the African Union Commission, Alpha Oumar KONARÉ. Both men wanted to further promote and improve the EU-AU relations. The EU package, which provides financial, technical and logistical assistance to the African continent, has already formed the basis for further future co-operation amongst the two organizations. EU Cutting Down on Red Tape

On Wednesday the EU adopted a new round of proposals aimed at facilitating the grant application process for NGO's and other small organizations. Past evidence has shown that many institutions are discouraged from applying for EU funding by the vast amount of time and experience required to comply with the regulations. Weblink.

EU to Co-operate on Health

The European Commission this week announced that the Union needed to co-ordinate more on health issues to overcome the large health inequality gap across the continent. Markos Kyprianou, the European Commissioner for Health and Consumer Protection, stated that this was the only way to effectively overcome health risks such as pandemics. Weblink.
