German Election Deadlock Bad for EU Decision-Making?

Following the deadlock in Germany's elections, fears are beginning to spread in Brussels that this will have an impact on the EUs own decision making process.

France Pays to Boost Birthrate

The French government has decided to give families with three children more financial support. This is an attempt to boost the French birthrate, which Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin has said is still insufficient.

Health and Consumer Protection Program 2007-2013

The European Commission plans to finalize its proposal for the new Health and Consumer Protection Program by the end of September. In July of last year, the Commission invited stakeholders to take part in a reflection process and express their views on a future EU health strategy. Stakeholders called for improved co-ordination amongst public health and other policy areas, the need for more comparable data on the impact of investments in health and further debate on healthcare.

Portugal Sex Education a Real Hit

Portugal's first late-night television show providing sex education has turned out to be extremely popular amongst the country's people. This news article reports that due to Roman Catholic Church influence in Portugal's education system, sex education is almost non-existent in secondary schools. The TV show aims at raising awareness within a country where many people still feel embarrassed to talk about sex.

Feedback from the Meeting of the extended “HIV/AIDS Think Tank”
5-6 April 2005, Luxembourg
In early April this year a meeting of the extended “HIV/AIDS Think Tank” was held in Luxembourg. The meeting addressed the rise of STI's and HIV/AIDS in Europe and concluded that in order to control the rising HIV/AIDS epidemic; a comprehensive solution is required alongside public prevention campaigns and awareness-raising. In Eastern Europe, special focus should be given to counteracting stigma and discrimination.

MEP Maria Martens Report On EU Africa Strategy
Netherlands MEP Maria Martens has drafted a report on the European Union's Africa Strategy. Brussels-based NGOs are working together on possible amendments to the MEP's report, for submission by October 7th. The European Commission has stated that it will not provide a copy of the report to the European Parliament until the draft goes public on the 12th of October 2005. The Council should be adopting conclusions in November and the final strategy should be adopted in December. Europe by Satellite
