€58 million Granted by European Commission to the Global Fund

Following the recent visit of Dr. Richard Feachem (as reported previously in nEUws), The Global Fund has received an extra €58 million from the European Commission to combat killer diseases such as HIV/AIDS, Malaria and Tuberculosis. Since 2002 the Commission has granted over €400 million to the Global Fund. Diseases such as HIV/AIDS kill over 6 million people each year. High Hopes for UK Presidency

The British government has pledged to double its amount of aid to £100 million for 2006 and 2007 to the Global Fund to fight killer diseases like AIDS and Malaria. Hopefully The UK's commitment to combat these diseases will also be reflected in new commitments by the EU as the UK begins its six-month turn holding the EU Presidency. The UK has already stated that during its presidency it aims to “ensure that the EU provides the leadership and quantity and quality of aid needed to tackle global poverty and achieve the Millennium Development Goals”. ECs 2005 Report – Development Policy and External Assistance

The European Community last week published a new document highlighting key facts from its 2004 annual report: “The European Community's Development Policy and the Implementation of External Assistance in 2004”. The report reveals the EC's aims and objectives as well as its achievements in 2004 with regards to development co-operation and external assistance. The report shows that the EC last year played a significant role with regards to limiting the spread of HIV/AIDS. Weblink.
Young People Trust NGOs and the EU

A recent survey by the EU-funded “EUYOUPART” (Political Participation of Young People in Europe) conducted in eight EU countries, revealed that 63% of young people are not interested in politics. Additionally the results also showed that young people trusted the EU more than their own national governments. Interestingly NGOs gain the most trust amongst young people; more than any political party. A New Social Policy for the EU

As the EU deals with globalisation and enlargement, will it be able to uphold it social and economic policy? With the arrival of the new member states also arose the need for a possible social policy reform as concerns were raised especially amongst the founding members with regards to social dumping and unfair tax competition. A panel of experts selected in 2002 have come up with a possible way forward for a European social policy.
