CALL FOR PROPOSALS: European Community's Poverty Reduction Effectiveness Programme
The European Community, together with the UK Department for International Development (DfID), has launched a Call for Proposals under its Poverty Reduction Effectiveness Programme (EC-PREP). The Call asks for policy-related research and has been assigned Euro 3,200,000 by DfID. Each grant is expected to be between Euro 50,000 and Euro 160,000. The maximum grant period is two years.

Promoting gender equality in development co-operation
A new Regulation has been brought out by the European Commission, which seeks to promote gender equality in all areas of development co-operation. The reason for this is to improve the delivery of concrete results, such as the improvement of conditions for women in developing countries.

Support from EU for “Perez Motta text” agreement on medicines
The EU has welcomed the World Trade Organisation's (WTO) agreement, which will allow improved access to medicines for developing countries. The agreement foresees the opportunity for developing countries, who are not in the position to produce their own medicines, to import generic versions. Through this agreement, it is hoped, that the agreement will allow developing countries and pharmaceutical companies will work together to protect public health and ensure access to medication required.

EC earmarks EUR 25 million for humanitarian aid in Southern Africa
The European Commission has authorised a further EUR 25 million support for victims of the humanitarian crisis in Southern Africa. The funding is designed to help vulnerable communities whose require food, water, sanitation and health aid.

The future of EC decentralised co-operation
An EC proposal for the revision of the decentralised co-operation regulation is due to be discussed in the Council and European Parliament in September with a view to adopting a new regulation by the end of 2003.
